Damn, I think I might need some time to process this and mourn properly. A couple of bank holidays should do the trick.

[350R+] -Spousal Interaction and Perks- · · 32 likes

I've been trying to think of IRL marriage benefits and how they could translate to torn, to frame this idea.

All I've got so far are:
- Hospital visitation rights -> increased chance of reviving a spouse, or a buff to the amount of health restored
- Conjugal jail visits -> increased chance of busting a spouse
- Credit score -> increase how quickly your credit score with duke goes up if you're married
- Shared inventory space (particularly when using items, it could show 'use another from spouse' ).
- Increased happiness regeneration if your spouses happiness (% of max) is at least higher than yours.
- Spend energy on 'woohoo' -> gain happiness.
- United front -> attack a target with your spouse in tow. Basically just a shortcut for two people attacking at the same time. Could be a possible small % stat buff if you're attacking a target with your spouse. Downside: If you and your spouse lose, then you both lose happiness at seeing the other beat up.

And another idea: show events relating to your spouse in your event log. E.G., "Your spouse, Chedburn, was hospitalized by someone".

Edit: and for a more detailed explanation:
Each of these is a way for your spouse to play a 'support' role as they would in real life. None of them offer any huge, unfair benefit, but they can make a small difference and (to me at least) make sense in the context of marriage, and the context of torn.

[310R+] Make Viruses More Useful (Ched Response) · · 17 likes

Another suggestion: make viruses a cash-over-time effect. Planting a virus, if successful, adds a bit of daily passive income. Each day, a virus has a random chance of being detected and eliminated. You can stack several viruses at once, but if one is detected all are detected. Additionally, when a virus is detected there's a chance you are caught and receive some jail time.

To my knowledge it would be the first time we've had any crimes which can bite you in the ass later (possibly some inconvenient time) rather than when committing the crime, just like real life.

This gives several opportunities to add things we could upgrade through edus, merits, enhancers, or stocks:
- Virus detection chance
- Virus stack limit
- Virus cash income multiplier
- Virus lifetime (if not based on detection chance)

And to recap the options for balancing this as mentioned above:
- Independent detection chances for each active virus (the more viruses you have active, the greater the risk of all of them being detected)
- Jail time without any notice that it will happen
- Viruses can be consumable or multiple/infinite use

Different virus types with different effects:
- A virus type that lowers the detection chance of your other viruses
- A virus type that increases the chance of your next virus being successfully planted
- A virus type that lowers the risk of a detected virus being traced back to you
- Viruses that give a greater amount of cash but which are more likely to be detected
- Viruses that give cash up-front before deleting themselves

I'm probably overbaking this idea but you get the gist.

Inaccurate timers on profile pages · · 5 likes

When a user is in hospital and the timer is counting down, it seems like the timer is updated by 1 second per tick event, by just subtracting a second.

This results in inactive tabs not counting time right due to how browsers (or at least, Firefox) throttle tabs which aren't in focus. E.G., you look at the profile, timer says 5 minutes remaining. Go away from that tab for 2 minutes and then come back, and it will say something like 4 minutes 30 seconds, which is obviously not right.

Could we get these updated so that on each tick event, it just calculates the difference between the current timestamp and the timestamp when the user will leave hospital? At least that way the timer would self-correct once the tab is re-focused, removing the need to refresh the page (probably saving torn a load of bandwidth on days like valentines, too).

Filter Event Log By Player · · 16 likes

Edit: Original title: 'View your past interactions with other players'

We now have good access to our event/action logs thanks to one of the recent updates.

One thing that's still difficult is searching through the logs for actions by specific players.

For example, you see a player name you recognize, but don't know why you recognize them. A former foe, or a customer? This feature would add a button to the actions box on the profile page, which when clicked shows you a version of the activity log scoped to actions between you and the player in question, to help jog your memory of who the person is to you.

Wrong info text when swapping hot&cold components ·

Teeny bug, when trying to swap the position of a cold component with a hot one, it lists the cold component as being too hot instead.

E.G., fan at heat 0, CPU at heat 60, trying to drag the fan onto the CPU says "Component Fan is too hot".

It's hard for me to come to a conclusion, too.

In an ideal world we wouldn't need it, true. People would debate the points, examine the evidence, and come to something resembling a rational conclusion; the earth is nearly spherical, vaccinations work and don't cause autism, etc. You could stumble across someone saying otherwise, and already be equipped with the tools to think critically about what they are saying.

We don't teach those skills in most schools worldwide. We teach labor skills, and we learn to memorize & believe what we are taught by the authorities present (teachers, parents). It primes us to believe things that future 'authorities' tell us (governments, popular figures, but also anything with enough upvotes or agreeable comment responses).

So, in the world we're in, do I believe a concerted effort should be made to censor misinformation which is being used to further someone's agendas? Yeah kinda; the negative impacts of not doing so have already become clear. Do I trust any particular governing body to use this power responsibly? NO! Governments are unstable, have their own moods and often have outlandish takes on any given topic to begin with.

I worry that any government that tries to censor information of any kind will eventually start censoring truth as much as misinformation. It becomes less about what's true and more about what is convenient for people to know.

I think it's yet another problem I would say was 'best' solved by fixing our education system and changing what skills we try to equip our youths with. More of a focus on finding out for yourself with experiments and results, more of a focus on how to actually parse the results of an experiment and check a report for worthiness (was the sample size big enough, was the control group handled sensibly, were there confounding factors or conflicts of interest? ETC ETC), but that's not a quick fix.

I Should Be Pro-Genocide, Because I'm Gay/Trans? · · 3 likes

OP's point was about whether genocide can be supported if you don't agree with the views of those being murdered. OP's principles say that genocide is wrong every time, even if the targeted group(s) are opposed to your own existence.

Not really relevant who they voted for or what their reasons were.

Edit: just for the record, my pointing this out was reason enough for Vegan to dislike as many of my forum points as possible before reaching the rate limit (mostly bug reports lmao). embarassing.

Yeah this pretty much. If someone is going to hate me I'd rather know; people don't really do themselves any favors by letting on about their hate, it's actually helpful.

That being said there's still a difference between being able to speak freely, and being able to use that freedom to cause trouble. Telling a guy you hate him because he's gay? Fine. Standing outside his house waving flags about it? Nahhhh.

C2.0 Layout shifts too much on mobile ·

I saw the issue yesterday a bit before reporting, but I think it was also the first time I'd used the android version since the fix you mentioned, does the app cache its pages? If so, it could have just been that, sorry! When I went back a couple hours later the issue was gone.

> What else did you have in mind?
'Loads' was probably an exaggeration. The other ideas involved some combination of padding / autoscrolling anyway but it sounds like this was already done and just wasn't working for me yesterday for whatever reason.

Cheers

C2.0 Layout shifts too much on mobile ·

I realized that I usually have the app zoomed out, and went to check if I could reproduce it at the default zoom level, but it looks like I can't reproduce it in either case now. Not sure if it was fixed already or if I was just seeing a bug with scrolling earlier but it works well now.

Device: LGE LG-H870 Android: 9 App version: 1.9.33

Loving the new crimes so far but I tried them on the android app recently and it feels like the mobile experience could be a bit more smooth and satisfying.

The problem is that when doing crimes (bottlegging in this case), the outcome message is a) above the content you're interacting with and b) variable-length. So each time you do a crime the entire interactive layout shifts down, then up, then down again when you do the next crime. It means constantly re-scrolling the bits you need into view and finding the actions each time. With bootlegging you might have to do this 40+ times in a row.

There's loads of ways to tweak it but I think one satisfying solution would be a drawer that slides up from the bottom and holds the outcome message, message close button, and maybe a 'do again' button like we used to have. This way the content has no need to shift about and the player would always find the next action buttons in the same place each time.

Would have made sense with the old crime system but there's more reasons not to with the new one. E.G., if you level and gain a new unique drop opportunity you'd want to switch to that crime, not continue doing 50 more of the last one.

Plus (but I have zero evidence for this) with how much detail has gone into the search for cash crime, I sorta predict there'll be some crimes which have success chances that change from attempt to attempt, like a 'heat' mechanic or something.

Hospital timer still shows if player is revived ·

When viewing a profile and the player is in hospital, if someone else revives them (probably also if they med out) the timer still shows once they're alived.

Not sure if the phone app has been re-logging-in without me doing anything, but I've been getting signed out without even using another device. Just a browser restart is sometimes enough, though I've only been experiencing this problem today.

The way I see it, if you keep the cash you're exchanging any respect decent people may have had for you, for a few 1's and 0's on ched's database (and if I'm a shit person, I guess I'd feel happy to make so many people unhappy). If someone only comes here to make the number go up or to make people feel like shit, I guess that's a good exchange. How sad though.

I always find this a fun conversation, because it turns out both the scummiest people you know, and the most successful people you know, will all be on drugs.

The scummy ones are on drugs and they aren't ashamed. The successful ones are on drugs, but hide it to distance themselves visually from the scummy ones. It's the people in the middle, the ones who think what they're told to think, and do what they're told to do, who have something against recreational drug use. They think they're copying their anti-drug stance from the successful people, not realizing how much coke those same people did last weekend / every day since.
