Edit: - so far over 3,500 words; i'll be taking a break and will be coming back to add more information and graphics to this but for now i'm just going to post this and see what people think before putting another few hours into it
I was just asked by a new player about stocks and decided to try and show them a guide for stocks in this section but was surprised that no one had made one so I thought to myself perhaps I should go ahead and make one so other players could perhaps benefit and maybe understand the stocks better. I should also say this guide wont explain how to make money or what to do with your money it'll simply explain what stocks are.
Index:1. Introduction
2. Information on each stock
3. Item pay out ratios to investment (using current prices, subject to change with market)
4. Listing of useful and not so useful benefits
5. Discussion on benefit blocks and investments
6. Outside effects (note: players are dividend on if these actually impact much but they're declared by the system)
*7. Changes which have happened since the creation of the guide.
1. IntroductionWelcome to the guide which will hopefully cover the stock market within the world of Torn. Some important things to note is that to first get into stocks you'll need to buy a stock ticker which can be purchased from the point market (not the one where you buy points) for 20 points. Once you've done that you're ready to start buying stock. Another important thing to note is that the stock market is risky, while it's true that you're likely to make money from the stocks if you know what you're doing it's not unheard of to make a loss even if you know what you're doing, I've heard from people who've invested 100b+ make massive losses up 10% simply because of how hard it can be to sell stock.
[image: i.gyazo.com](I own the stock ticker, will look different if you haven't)
Right now it takes exactly one week for the NPC to start buying stock, it's important to know that this doesn't mean your stock will instantly sell once it his the magical one week but instead the NPC will buy your stock gradually from 10 shares to 1 million shares, it's completely random. It does this to help keep the market active because it's hard to sell stock when everyone buys low and sells high. Stocks often skyrocket or crash within a 1 week time frame so you
should keep this in mind.
Lastly for the introduction section there are two ways to buy stock right now, you can either invest with X amount of money so that if you're planning to say invest 1 billion torn bucks you don't need to calculate. The other option is to buy X amount of shares so if you're looking to buy a benefit block you don't need to calculate the costs you can simply buy the number of shares needed and it'll let you know the cost on the confirmation screen.
[image: i.gyazo.com]As for the different tabs each do the following:-
Info: This tab shows the basic information relating to the stock as well as some "role play" elements such as the name of the CEO for the company, useful for finding the number of shares currently on the market, how many shares are in the game on total and the market cap (value) of the total shares within the game.
About: This tab displays a description of the company which mostly add to "role play" flavour, the important information can be seen on the left hand side is very important as they inform you of what affects the value of the shares which aren't simply to do with the shares itself. They also hold the information for each stock for how many shares you need to unlock the benefit of that stock as well as what the benefit is. (important to note that these benefits used to take time before becoming active, now they're instant and become active as soon as you own the number of shares needed)
Graph: The graph is simply that, it displays the value of the stock in question over a number of time frames which are 24 hours, 7 days, one month, 6 months and a year. This is useful for working out if investing is good for stock as you can compare its history and get quick information on the value of it.
Latest Changes: This is the simplest tab, it basically shows you the 15 minute quarterly updates.
Buy: as explained at the start, to buy stock by shares or by money investment.

3. Item pay out ratios to investment To help those who are looking to buy benefit blocks (BBs) I've added this section to share what the payout % ratio is to the CURRENT value, this section I will try to keep updated once a month however do check for yourself before buying anything if basing your purchase on this section, you have been warned.
Well first we should find out what stock actually pay out with "weekly" items:
PRN
EWM
SLAG
FHG
HRG
TCHS
LSC
SYM
It is also important to note that I'll not be adding in dividend stock as they're very infrequent as some can pay out twice in one week and sometimes it can take 2-3 months for a payout. Another important thing to note is I've added HRG to the list however it pays out in "random" items so when valuing it will be under my personal opinion as the % for each house isn't public or at least not to myself, if found this section will be updated to reflect.
Stock name - Cost per benefit - Value of item - Ratio (to two decimal places)
PRN - 210m - 1.3m - 0.61%
SLAG - 313m - 1.2m - 0.25% (once every 14 days confirmed by ched)
EWM - 630m - 1.2m - 0.19%
FHG - 710m - 13.5m - 1.90 %
HRG - 550.5m - around 1m - 0.18%
TCHS - 62.2m - 300k - 0.48%
LSC - 50.8m - 850k - 1.67%
SYM - 293m - 4.4m - 1.50%
this is the weekly (on average) money return you'll make one each stock and once again this is only updated for Feb 2015.

4. Listing of useful and not so useful benefitsThis will be a list of the stock which I personally find to be useful and those which I find to not be useful, I'll all add a brief reason rather than simply saying which is and which isn't so that you can understand the reasons. Also as this is opinion based it's likely that other will disagree due to having different view points so I'll try and be as objective as possible.
Useful:
TCB - This gives you improved investment rates when investing money to the city, very useful as it's common place for a player to invest 2 billion (the max) into the city for 3 months which will cover the cost of drugs and rehab for those 3 months.
SYM - Gives an item which can be sold for profit or can be used to give a chance of getting 10 vico or 10 xanax
TSBC - While still a dividend stock it returns large sums of money as the stock itself stocks a lot to gain the benefit and so when it does payout it pays out well.
WLT - Useful for those who travel a lot, while a private island reduces time for travel this will reduce it even further so if you're in need of getting from A to B quickly to buy something or to gain merits or to simply rehab, a very useful stock.
YAZ - This allows you to place an advertisement banner which is better than the other newspaper benefits as it'll show up in most sections of the newspaper, be click-able to your profile, can be made for whatever torn related reason you want and will remain active for a week.
MCS - This would be one of the best stocks as it give you random 300E payouts, while E used to go back to the original max it no longer does this and will stack the 300E meaning if sleeping you may log in with 450E or worst case you log out, log in to find 300E in the morning, that's still 150E more than expected.
LSC - Gives you an item which can be sold for profit or can be used to give 100 entries in the lottery.
TCHS - Gives you an item which can be sold for profit or used for medical items
HRG - Gives you a random property and has the rare chance of giving you a castle
FHG - Gives a weekly item which can be sold for profit or used for an energy refill + 500 Happy
SLAG - Gives an item once every 14 days which can be sold for profit or used
IOU - Gives you random chances of getting money from lawyer cases + dividend random payouts
TMI - While a dividend stock, it returns large sums making it more useful than lower dividend stocks
PRN - Gives a weekly item which can be sold for profit or used
WSSB - with the update to WSSB now removing 10% education time it's extremely useful, from start to finish it'll save months of time in education.
EVL - This should now be considered useful This will give a boost to your happy once every 3 days on average (boosted from once a week). Happy plays a huge part in the gains you get, over a week you'll drop a lot of happy and start to notice a loss to stat gains (10-20% in extreme cases) so unless you're FHCing EVL works as a good balance to maintaining happy and maintaining gains.
Not Useful:
TCSE - This stock does nothing, it's used to simply show the total value of all stocks and thus worthless.
IIL - This stock is used to reduce coding times for viruses by 50% which helps towards one merit, apart from that, utterly useless
BAG - BAG being updated is still useless while less useless than it was. Unless you're a hardcore fan of "fun" ammo, I'd suggest suggest avoiding.
TCM - 25% off car parts, it sounds nice but when you realize that buying car parts is extremely cheap and you'll be restricted more with the racing points rather than the price of the parts itself it quickly becomes redundant, more so when it saves you a million while costing hundreds of millions.
ISTC - This stick gives free education which is nice but as education is so cheap it doesn't make sense to buy, you'll most likely lose more from the stock dropping than the education benefits.
GRN - Dividend stock, low value, low payout rates, low payout value.
TCT - Free personal ads, rarely used in the game itself, cheap vs cost of stock..
MSG - Free adverts within the newspaper, they were useful until trade chat came along and replaces the need for them while also being free.
Unique Group- This section will be for stock benefits which are rather useful however only when in a certain situation such as owning a company so are normally useless unless doing the related thing:
C&C - This stock is great for people who are planning to start up their own oil rig and is arguably a must for those who currently run their own oil rig. The issue is simply that the number of people doing those things are very few and so it's easy to suggest staying staying from this benefit block.
SYS - This stock is used to prevent others using the hacking perk which is used to steal between 1-3% of a company bank. It's a must for those who store large sums of money within a company however for those who don't and even more so for those who don't own a company it's a useless stock.
TCP - This stock grants 10% more profits for a company and once again follows the problem in that unless you own a company it's utterly useless.
ELBT - ELBT is used to give 10% cheaper house upgrades, this is useful if you're looking to upgrade a property such as a private island however it's important to note that it's likely to be cheap on the market than to use this stock and buy/upgrade from scratch.
TGP - This stocks once again falls into the "you must own a company to have this be useful" trap, it grants a boost to company advertisement which is great but as before mentioned.
5. Discussion on benefit blocks and investmentsOkay now It's safe to say you know a fair bit about the stock when it comes to their values, their benefits and so on but now it's time to talk about the two ways to "invest" into stocks. The first way to invest and is the more common way when starting out with stocks is to invest into a stock just for their benefit block. This has a wide range of benefits as it'll allow you to not only have a constant source of income as you'll normally be investing in those which return profit but it means you'll be safe knowing that even if the stock itself lowers in value you'll retain the benefit.
The other way to invest is simply to put money into a stock which you think will go up in value over time. This way of investing is normally saved for those with large sums of money and carries huge risks but also huge benefits. When starting out I'd suggest keeping away from this way of investing into the stocks until you know yourself more about the stocks and how they work to avoid losing money.
6. Outside effectsThis section will cover outside effects on stocks which influence the direction a stock price will go, It's important to know these thing so that you're able to better predict through updates in the game, changes to items and so on how they'll impact a stock.
Dirty Bomb.
Okay it's fair to say that these things are very rare to ever show up but it's important to note that whenever a dirty bomb is dropped every stock within the game will lose value which will keep going for on average a few hours. It's best not to worry about these as stocks will normally go back to normal after this so when you see this happen do not panic.
Stock factors, the below will list what is given to already effect the direction of stock pricing but also note that not all stock show what in game activity do affect the stocks but this list will cover all the stock which do along with what does.
