A mass mail and a long thread

On 01 Jul 2018 Champion [1927067] opened "Hilgar vs Rise Above" in Faction Discussion. The opening post quoted a message that Champion said Hildegarde [2050558] had mailed to Rise Above members. Participant claim[1][2]

By the archive's last fetch the thread had 443 replies and 8,968 views. 134 different players posted in it, and 5 posts were written by Torn staff, officers or moderators.[2]

The message and the first replies

As quoted, the message said Rise Above would be hit by bounties, hospitalizations overseas and generalized persecution starting the next day, because of Kata [1990396]. It said the faction leader had been asked and had refused.[1]

The message also said a manhunt against every person wearing a Rise Above tag would open the next day at around the same time. It told recipients to take any complaint to their faction leaders. Champion added that Hildegarde was on a one man mission to get Kata kicked.[1]

Champion also said the beef probably stemmed from WIB. Community speculation[1]

Tolshortte [648554] replied that Kata would be kicked only for Kata's own conduct. They said that if Torn became no fun for the young players in their faction, they would give Kata the faction and its contents. Participant claim[3]

Tolshortte later wrote that Kata had played a part in the drama. They said they did not count Discord as part of Torn and would not be threatened over social media drama. Participant claim[4]

Kata and Hildegarde speak

On 02 Jul 2018 Kata thanked players for their support and said they had found a home in Rise Above. Participant claim[5]

On 03 Jul 2018 Kata posted a long message addressed to WIB. It asked to be left alone with their faction, and quoted a message dated 2018-04-12 that Kata called a last ditch effort to resolve the matter. Participant claim[6]

On 02 Jul 2018 Hildegarde posted replies to other players, including "Keep pushing, see what happens :) I've tolerated your barking long enough, last warning." Another read: "Wanna see how deep I can hurt yours?"[7][8]

On 03 Jul 2018 Hildegarde wrote that they had asked the leader, been refused and done what they said they would. Hildegarde said the matter took no more than 5 cumulate minutes of their time a day and was a small side-quest. Participant claim[9]

Jokes, insults and staff comments

Several replies were jokes. Nova [1570883] said Hildegarde had given Kata a month's worth of Torn City News content. Cheque [1962848] said they were more worried about an untied shoelace. mikk [1771931] posted an image with a Duke mission quip. Joke[10][11][12]

Louis_de_Pointe [1963196] wrote that they hoped Rise Above would not back down, and called the behaviour malicious. The post drew 26 likes. Participant claim[13]

Flak [2091491] posted a mocking impersonation of an unnamed angry player, and the post drew 12 dislikes. Batman [984129] wrote on 03 Jul 2018 that the more they heard about Hilde, the more Hilde sounded like a little bitch.[14][15]

Sky [380980], marked as a Torn officer/committee member, posted a reaction image with a joking line about WIB. mug [553318], also marked as officer/committee, wrote that turning a faction into a filler weeds out weak members, and that stronger factions in the game were good. On 03 Jul 2018 mug remarked that Kata's post was still shorter than Hilde's posts about Hilde.[16][17][18]

What came after

The last posts came in late July. On 26 Jul 2018 Puscifer [61736] made a joke about hair. On 30 Jul 2018 EKO-Cobra [1952447] asked what had happened to Rise Above, saying they were following from the newsletter. The archive shows no answer.[2][19][20]

On 31 Dec 2018 CRLF [2095076] listed the thread, with 443 replies, in a roundup of 2018 threads. CRLF listed it again on 06 May 2019 in another list.[21][22]

How to read a story

Every statement in a Torn Story is checked against the archived posts it cites. Statements without a label are established: the record shows them directly. Everything else is labelled and says who is speaking.

Established
The record shows it directly: a post and its date, staff's own words, a thread's figures or TornLife data.
Participant claim
What someone involved said about their own actions or experience. Their account, not verified.
Community speculation
Guesses, theories and rumours from players.
Joke
Banter or trolling, presented as such.
Generated by TornLife from 22 sources · verified · model claude-sonnet-5

Drafted by a language model from the archived posts listed above, then checked three ways before publication: TornLife's validator (every number and citation must match the sources), deterministic statement rules (no unlabelled allegation, no real-world personal details, no claims about why anyone was federally jailed) and a separate critic and fact-checker that read each statement against its sources. It reports what players said; it is not Torn's own statement.
