What is net worth in Torn and what is the best way to increase it?

Torn publishes no full networth formula. Staff say items count at a hidden long-term-average value, not the market price or the item's Value, so networth can differ from market value. The wiki says Piggy Bank money counts[1], and networth is broken down on the Personal Stats page. Networth rises by holding more value, and stocks, bank interest, trading and mugging are the documented levers.

How networth is calculated

No official component list or formula is in the sources. The wiki says money put in the Piggy Bank is shown on the Personal stats page under networth and counts toward total networth[1]. Ranks use networth as one measure of progress, alongside level, crimes done and total battle stats[2].

Staff say an item's networth contribution is a hidden value based on a long-term average, not the current market price or the Value shown under the description. This is meant to prevent manipulation, so an item can contribute more or less than its market value. No source document in this pack carries that statement.

Reports and limits

  • Staff say external tools such as TornPDA give only a rough estimate. One player's PDA figure moved by about 60m when they opened a bazaar, which staff attributed to the hidden valuation.
  • In 2020 an officer said market value and networth value are not the same, replying to a report that new clothing raised networth by 1b though valued at about 39m. He said this was probably correct, from memory.
  • A 2016 player reported networth jumping from about $57 million to over $1 billion, with items attributed $1.044 billion against his own estimate of about $44.1 million. No explanation is given.
  • A 2020 player observed that faction vault money does not appear to count. That is one report with no official reply.
  • A 2024 bug report inferred that networth is recalculated by a manual trigger after trade actions and automatically at a 15-minute mark. It is the player's inference, not staff confirmation. The same reporter believed $88m of cash was briefly counted on two accounts after a vault deposit. Unconfirmed.
  • The sources do not cover the effect of loans, spending, training or drugs on networth.

Increasing networth

Networth rises by holding value. Cash income counts once it is held. Item purchases may not register at the price paid, given the hidden valuation. No source names one best method; it depends on stage and goal.

  • Stocks: benefits depend on shares owned and become active as soon as a block is bought[3]. Current Stocks 2.0 cash-dividend stocks pay random cash dividends at approximately 20% APR. That figure comes from findings that no source document here carries.
  • Historical: Bug's 2018 guide put dividends at about 5% of block value roughly every 3 months, 20% a year[4].
  • Bank interest: 1.5 million TCB shares improve City Bank rates[5], listed as 10% with merits taken into account[6].
  • Yield: a 2019 guide says to maximise yearly dollar return divided by the investment's present cost[7].
  • Travel trading: a 2026 guide reports roughly 850k per trip with flowers or plushies, and about 1.3m with scales, which needs about 2.5m carried[8]. Item market sales carry a 5% fee[9].
  • Mugging: each Masterful Looting merit upgrade adds 5% to mugging money[10].

Stock price direction is hard to predict, and how buying and selling move prices is only theorised[11]. Scamming is not against the rules and staff will not recover lost cash or items[12].

Networth medals

Networth medals require holding a level for set days: Apprentice $100,000 for 3 days, Millionaire $1,000,000 for 3 days, Capitalist $10,000,000 for 7 days, Billionaire $1,000,000,000 for 28 days, Tycoon $100,000,000,000 for 112 days. No source document here carries these figures. TornLife's highest observed networth is $3,433,766,099,414 (Penicillin), last observed 19 Sep 2026[13].
