How to tell you have levelled
- There is no visible XP bar. When you have enough experience, an upgrade link appears and you click it to gain the level[3].
- Progress can be checked by paying $75,000 at the Fortune Teller in China, or by working in a 7* Game Shop (wiki, 2026-02).
- The XP needed per level is not shown in the sources.
Other XP sources
The wiki (2026-02) lists crimes, gym training, working at a job (work stats) and company specials that trade Job Points for Experience (Clothing Store, Nightclub, Hair Salon, Theater). Busting, gambling, flying and racing are not known to give experience. The per-action size of these sources is not published in the sources.
Caveats
- A 2019 guide advises attacking higher-level targets only once total stats are above 1k, because target level does not show their stats. It also warns against attacking in New Players Chat, which gives low XP and a bad reputation.
- Energy spent attacking is not spent in the gym, so fast levelling can leave battle stats lower. This is one 2019 player's point. More levels give more life but not more battle stats.
- Levelling gets slower after the early levels, and the wiki says levelling in Torn is much slower than in most games[4].
- Ranks do not always depend on level[4], though level is one of several rank triggers (wiki, 2021).
Low-level route (opinion)
A 2019 guide to level 15 suggests spending nerve on crimes, training each stat to about 100 in the gym, then attacking and leaving high-level, low-stat players. It is one player's opinion.
Level holding and busting
Some players level hold: they skip the upgrade click, keep earning XP, and can upgrade several levels at once later (wiki, 2026-02). It is optional. A 2024 player says the benefits are higher Ranked War respect and being easier to bust out of prison[5].
Sources disagree on busting. A 2021 post says you become harder to bust with higher level[6]. A 2017 post says a higher level is better at busting but harder to bust for others[7].
Levels up to 15 unlock features such as companies at level 3 and the travel agency at level 15 (2020 player list). Max life rises with each level[2].

There are ways to speed this process up but the fact is leveling on Torn is not like most games, its a much slower process and something earned. Ranks are earned various ways and do not always depend on your level, this is a common misconception new players make.

Again, if your only concern is getting busted quickly then you should use it before you level further, since you become harder to bust with higher level. There is no event that makes the book better than just any other random time.
