A pop up that tells you when you're being attacked, so you can travel or whatever... This is legal? O.o
Agreed... that script is commonly used, and a variant of it autoflies you
all scripts should be banned. Even a simple script which shows drug usage in one's profile gives a significant advantage in the speed of chaining. The suggestión forums is there which can be used to make certain changes in game
Yo listen up Admin and all of you other fukers!! I Play this f**kin game becouse I LOVE to break the fukkkin rules. I will never press that fukkin button...!A button like that shows that your fukkin morons!!
I will NEVER press it...! And you cant fukkin make me you bastards!!
The autofly is what's illegal because it automates the process. There must be some sort of user interaction for it to be legal.
Popup: "Hey, your health just dropped. Do you want to visit the Travel Agency?"
You: "Why yes, yes I would!"
You: *clicks ok*
You: *clicks Mexico*
^Perfectly legal
As long as the player had to go through the actual travel page then yes that would be perfectly legal.
Any arrangement which bypasses the travel page should not, because that would constitute an unfair advantage imo.
What is currently still very much a grey area is the issue of not rendering pages as part of what a script does.
I personally feel that any script that affects the actions of another player by skipping page loads, revealing information instantly that would normally take some effort to procure or circumventing necessary click sequences in a way gives the script user a speed advantage over another player shouldn't be allowed, because that would clearly constitute creating an unfair advantage for the script user over players who are not using it.
It is problematic even if it's considered legal at the moment. It does give the user an advantage, and it is also difficult to know if someone is using a script that does it automatically.
Letting you know that you're being attacked is clearly an advantage over other players.
It may be perfectly legal but lets not kid ourselves and say that there is no advantage there over a non script user, because its pretty obvious...
Your last paragraph here would also make IRC bots illegal, and we all know we love those.
Trouble is, IRC bots and most userscripts and services is all done client-side, so Torn can't clearly track it. Sure, they can check access logs for pages, but there's no way to *prove* it was a script versus a user.
"Oh, this this and this happened 0.2 seconds after that that and that happened? Prove it was a script and not just me being in the right place at the right time."
Banning people over this sort of suspicious will lead to mass fire and pitchforks.
The API actually aids in this, because Torn can track those requests and more easily see if something fishy is growing. But again, we can't just ban all non-API scripts because they'd be very hard to detect and prove.
So part of this is still based on good faith, because there are things that can be done client-side that Torn can't track. But, if these sort of things are discovered and proven, I'm sure the user would fall into the "more extreme cases" category of rule breaking and the impending punishment.
Can you do something similar with the updated citywatch now?
Does a script user have an advantage over a non-script user? Sure, in some cases.
The real question is... if the non-script user is so concerned about this, why aren't they themselves using scripts?
Making the claim that this is supposed to be a text-based game doesn't help anyone's argument here - they easiest thing for a computer to do is read data and do math. Even if Torn disables the API and comes out and says "all scripts are illegal" - guess what? There will still be scripts, and they'll have no way of detecting them, since they all process the data client-side. And being a text-based game only aids in that, because nothing's easier then reading plain text through a hyper text protocol.
No one will ever get scripts banned or shut down, the best Torn can do is draw a line for legal and illegal, and strictly enforce it - which I believe they are doing.
Not using scripts may put you at a disadvantage, but it's your choice to put yourself there.
Torn Tools and DoctorN, along with others, both allow you to set custom health alerts. I personally have mine set to alert me if my life falls below one less than my max health. From there, when the alert comes in, it's a matter of clicking the alert, clicking city, clicking travel agency, and clicking Mexico.
I'm sorry... I doubt that. Health detection scripts are simply too slow, and the alternative as I built it is illegal; I have not distributed it to anyone after Clansdancer so kindly informed me it was illegal.
Err, not everyone has access to scripts. I for example play in my work laptop and phone mostly. Its pretty stupid to say that if we must play in a level field with other players, we must get extra goodies which the game doesn't even supply. No thanks, there should be no extra requirements in playing the game fairly. The game is already complicated enough for 4/5th of the playerbase who can't even play it properly and now people are getting more advantage over them through scripts. I am not sure how Torn is drawing a line and strictly enforcing it. Any thing that provides advantage over another person should be strictly illegal, there is no line to be drawn there. I am not sure how torn can see who is having advantage, but i'd rather have 0.1% of active players have advantage over me than 10%. If it is illegal and they distribute it, they could get deleted for good. That would be a half decent deterrent.
Tbh if you need scripts to play torn well then you are sadly lacking in certain areas.
And if you cant play fair you shouldnt play at all.
>.<
People are using these auto-jail / auto-fly when you are under attack scripts right now. Even the version which just alerts you that you are under attack is a very clear advantage to the defender and causes harm to the attacker. It is a giant pile of bullsh*t that staff has allowed this to continue.
If using this sort of script can't be detected, I would be in favor of adding a 45 second delay in when your life data gets passed over the API.
Problem with that is, since the script is already illegal, they'd just start scraping a page in Torn itself to get their life number.. The only way you could 'detect' this would be to look for consistencies with the player using the script. i.e.(a hypothetical situation): if he gets attacked 10 times, all ten attacks are supposed to finish within 10 seconds and he / she manages to jail / fly away during all 10 I think it's safe to assume something is wrong.. an educated guess is the best you can do.
edit: The only way to prevent that completely is more captcha's afaik.. and even they are fairly easy to get around and would also annoy normal players.
That's not what you said. You said if it gives you an advantage, then it's "illegal." Why are you spreading lies as a staff member? You either don't know what you are talking about or you are intentionally talking out your ass.
