We've all been experiencing the downtime lately and, yes, this is "another thread" about it - but I have a legit question here...: Should Downtime be Normal?
A lot of player that have been around for a while - even longer than me - joke about the downtime and say how it's normal or expected or part of the game... but should it really be this way?
I've had a Steam profile for like 9 years now, give or take, and at any time on any computer I can play hundreds of real-time 3D games with thousands of players around the world. So why is it that Torn, a "text" game, can't keep up with the basic standards of a 1990's message board?
Yeah it's humorous and we joke about it, but really...? Come on... What can possibly be their excuse? Users should not experience 5xx server errors multiple times a month.
Torn prides itself as a "text" game so for anyone who chooses to make the argument that it's more than text - my response would be that Torn needs to change their description of themselves. But even so, even if it's not a "text" game, as stated earlier there's hundreds if not thousands of non-text real-time first-person 3D games I have never ever had a single problem with.
Discuss...?
P.S. --- Torn admin peeps.... Don't make updates in a Friday, because 1) I assume you don't want to work on the weekend and 2) you probably won't work on the weekend, therefor we're all down for 3 days... Thanks.
P.P.S. --- RAID 5 and 6 are bad... Go with RAID 10 next time and avoid all this shit...
In the last 9 years I've been able to play Counter Strike online, anytime, anywhere, with hundreds of people around the world on the same server, with zero downtime whatsoever. How are they able to provide a reliable service for a fast action real time 3D game when Torn can't even reliably serve text...?
Torn is a much smaller company than those mentioned - to my understanding.
Even MUDs can experience failures/downtimes etc especially when an operation like this has happened the new server.
It is not convenient and i have hmphed a bit at the screen recently.
What I would like is an emergency Torn for if things go pete tong we can play a much more basic version of Torn with most the functions maybe while things get settled in the main game.
there was an announcement about planned downtime to replace server hardware due to a failure.
im no expert but an educated guess is that the errors that have happened are prolly due to the start of the failure which got worse to the point of total failure.
since the hardware update there has been server issues again. Its a complex issue and its annoying and frustrating, which is why theres a team of devs employed to do this stuff which is being fixed as i am typing this.....
No system is ever perfect and if you bothered to check the announcements about the DDoS attacks you would know they are partially to blame. They are also rolling out new attack systems. No amount of theoritical runs can ever predict all possible outcomes of new software and systems. Add to that, the shear server load of the Elimination Comp slowed everything up and caused timeouts.
All of this adds up to end user dissatisfaction
Im not asskissing the devs etc and im certainly not an expert but get your head out your ass for 5 mins and consider the big picture.
bottom line is that if you seriously feel that strongly about it then dont start a whiney bitchy thread about it, simply vote with your feet and cancel your sub.

Are people seriously comparing companies with hundreds if not thousands of employees along with millions and billions in revenue to Torn with 10s/100s times less capability?
