Text browser games do attract a lot of players of a nerdy disposition that is putting it delicately.

I have played a lot of text browser games and every single one of them has plenty of cheating nerds in it. Its just the way how it is.

The only thing that can be done about it is to get rid of them as soon as possible.

Also it does go without saying you should shun the nerds as well ie have no dealings with them and dont help them in anyway.

There are nerds of all varieties some of them may seem quite nice and friendly and cool. But all they really want is what they are after and that is why they cultivate a massive friendbase for themselves and they like to group themselves together as well in alliances (often hidden alliances) or maybe be more open about it and group themselves in the same faction.

It's just their way. It's not Torn specific. In all games you'll have modders and cheaters and scammers. Sometimes "why" is the most pointless question to ask.

I don't think it's that simple. Probably a combination of a lot of things. Recognition, the thrill, addiction, rewards, alcohol, ambition, greed. Can be so many reasons. Not everyone is as calculated about it though. Some people think they see an opportunity and don't think it through. They just grab it.

OP, didnt you just deny that people got away with it during this WSSBgate in another thread ? Whom of those who profited of this scandal cheated and whom did not? Beats me how anyone could differentiate that. Not even ched knows because leaked info is spread outside of torn. Also cheds window of forbidden trade isn´t some kind of ultimate truth and proves nothing. Those who traded just outside of that window could be as much "cheaters" as those who were punished.

Well, there have been more obvious cases of cheating before and seldom anyone got punished. I guess people cheat to get an edge over the rest of us. And yes they are most often nerds...

some people find cheating fun and enjoy the chance of getting caught maybe its the Adrenalin rush they get from it or whatever but they will always have there reason

i dont see the point of it in this game or any other game beside single player ones where the "cheats" can make it more enjoyable for longer but here its about interacting with the community which makes it fun or having wars or getting into a feud with someone

Because it's extremely satisfying to figure out a way to break or abuse the system to your advantage... and get away with it.

What do you expect, some cheaters do get away with what they do and just saying they don't is something we say to discourage them. It's when they do enough of it to leave a trail back to them or do it blatantly obvious that we catch them, sometimes by picking up pieces over time.

Bigger rewards for less effort, and this is a crime game after all, technically it's all in the spirit of it all even if it's against the game rules.

There's also the problem with this specific incident with the WSSB, Ched can't tell who was actually cheating, that just shows that, even though they didn't get away with the money, they got away with it overall.

We can't pretend cheating won't happen, it's attractive as you get more rewards over almost any "legit" way, and we can only enforce so much, so some are gamblers in that regard, take the chance. I'd wager many have got away with cheating over the years on smaller scales.

And of course there's the *******s, the ones that do it just to be like "Ha, I'm better than the rest of you".

This also brings me to why I cheat on some other games, single player games, mind you. It's fun. Of course it's not exactly the same as it is here as this is a Text based MMORPG and the games I talk about are usually shooters, or sandbox games. I mean anyone who's played GTA would be lying if they said they never tried to cheat.

So truth be told, like anything, there are many reasons, many motivations.

Why do students turn in plagiarized papers?

Why do job applicants include lies on their resumes?

Why do athletes take illegal PEDs?

Why are other MMOs infested with bots and cheaters?

Why do fools fall in love?

Wait..forget that last one.

In any activity, there will be those who do not follow the rules, in an attempt to gain an advantage over those who do. Even in games that mean nothing outside of the game itself, people cheat. I stopped playing Words with Friends because too many of my opponents cheated. Words with Friends!
Vernunzio [730674]

While it's not right, I can see the incentive for students plagiarizing, job applicants lying, and athletes juicing. Those all lead back in one way or the other to acquiring more of a perceived to be scarce resource, which is money. Even if you take the money out, those people could be described as winning something, whether it is a grade, a game, or the job position.

I see less of a point to cheating in MMOs and especially in this game, and especially even more so with the downside of a ban. There is no "winning" of Torn. There is only achieving the goals you set for yourself. What's the point of cheating to achieve a goal you set for yourself? What are the cheaters gaining? Also, read this in reference to the stat/money building kind of cheating, because cheating to win a faction war is, while still not right, more in line with the above examples and less surprising that people do it.

Also, since someone from Relentless downvoted my thread, why do cheaters group together? Like I mentioned earlier I think a big part of it is that to them, the trying to get away with cheating is in of itself the game.

this is the truth: people can become addicted to anything, and number addiction is extreme, a complete runaway train careening off the tracks while building more track to keep going kinda affect it has

yep, these people are addicted to gaining numbers, accumulating amounts, widening the gap

it's like a race to them and if they are not lapping people they don't feel safe

number addicts are dangerous

it all began in the 80's...

The latter part of my post provides the answer to your question of "what's the point of cheating in Torn?" It's to gain an advantage over those players who do not cheat. If they get caught (many do not, or at least not for a long time) and banned, oh well - on to the next game. Those who cheat to gain money can use the money to buy items that help them train their stats better, making them stronger in battles and therefore more likely to win (whether in faction wars or in solo efforts).

It can be difficult for "law-abiding" players of games to recognize, but there are plenty of game players whose primary goal is to break the game by finding loopholes or ways to benefit outside the rules. That's their definition of "winning".
Honey-Badger [50716]

I don't get why this thread exist. It's pretty common sense.....why do pepole cheat at anything. For a gain without having to earn it. You ask why cheat at torn though when it is a fun silly little game. thats the point its not like they get their nuts cut off if they get caught. Worst case scenario account gets deleted and they lose silly little game........I have no idea why i read some of this thread or wasted my time answering LOL
Honey-Badger [50716]

BTW i down voted your thread because it is stupid and if you can't figure out the simple answer to your own question.......well.......

Saying because someone from a faction rates down a thread now means they are cheater is again stupid....that word seems to come up a lot huh? I have never cheated so check me out all you want which makes you like msot of the people on here making crap up in your head and then stating as if it is a fact to damage and hurt other people. At least cheaters get some benefit for themselves but the motivation of people like you to damage and hurt someone reputation without any knowledge or facts is what is sick. Very sadistic.
