TLDR at the bottom

Case Study

1 merit cost 250 points. At current price of 54k per point, it will cost you 13.5m per merit.

At level 50, I am allowed to buy 25 merits (formula is = your level / 2) so total cost will be 337.5m (25 merits*13.5m).

Since I do not have any merits on bank interest, I will put all into bank interest enabling me to upgrade 6 times.

At 0 bank interest upgrade, my 2 month investment interest rate is at 4.62%

At 6 bank interest upgrade, my 2 month investment interest rate is at 11.22% (source : Bank Interest Rates)

I will then calculate my gains using 2 scenarios:

1) I have 2b cash and put all into 2 month investment without buying merits

2) I will spend 337.5m to get bank interest upgrade, then put remaining money (1.66b) into 2 month investment.

Conclusion

TLDR - Its freaking worth it!

So, we know it is worth it to buy merits if applied to upgrade bank interest rates, specifically from level 0 to level 6. Is it worth buying the 7th upgrade? What about the 8th through 10th?

Is it worth it buying merits if you are going to apply them to anything else other than banking? Can that even be determined?

Your thread title is a little misleading as your answer deals with one very small component of merit buying.

Yes, it is worth it. That's like asking if it's worth it to train your stats.

I covered everything in my first reply, but heres an example Ill go into more detail with

But look at it this way. 1 merit costs about the same as an FHC. Lets say you have no merits on any stats. 1 merit: 3% gain in stat. 1 fhc: way way way less than 3% gain. 2 merits: 3% in 1 stat. 2 fhc: way way way less than 3% of stat. And so forth.

OP looks at numbers and money. Bank interest is the most direct bridge between merits and money.

However, every 2 levels players should buy a merit.

It doesnt matter what you spend them on. More is better. More options is better. Having more merits is better. Its always better to have purchased all you can than to not have those extra merits.

"At level 50, I am allowed to buy 25 merits (formula is = your level / 2) so total cost will be 337.5m (54k*13.5m)"

Bold part is wrong. I think you want to write 25 *250*54k= 337.5m, not 54k*13.5m.

My point was that these are questions he should have thought about, and answered, to really make this a valuable guide. The way it is written, it deals with just one specific instance.

The thing with merits is after a certain point it gets a lot more difficult to earn more merits.

Merits can be used for so many useful things, so yes it is worth it buying all the merits you can.

Swapping play money for more merits is a very good strategy. If you arent doing it because of lack of play money then earn more play money and buy all the merits you can.

Having linked here from the Popular Threads feed, this does feel like Q&A, even if the title was different...

But there's plenty of merits that 'cost' more than 14m to achieve. And once I get George's gym paid for, it's first on my to-do list.
dESTROYS [67441]

Same question as is it worth using points to refill energy daily for training...

Merits are rare, and even if you had all possible merits in the game you still wouldn't be able to get half the upgrades.

If you can spare the money, go for it. If you can't, don't go for it.
Delusional_One [1510633]

as easy as it is to make money in this game, I'd happily give my money away and start at 0 networth if I could max out all of my merit upgrades.
Chuckyboy2 [1875579]

This is very limited in how your answering your question. I've maxed my banking merits without buying a single one how is your formula helping me determine whether to buy merits for passive, weapons, or even money producing things like mugging and awareness?

What I want to know is it worth it to spend on those items keeping in my mind that I would have to give up one of my stock blocks to do what you said.

I think ultimately everyone should do it but I think this guide does nothing to really delve into the question your asking. I also think the better questions are when to do it and why do it at that stage.
JussiJernkuuk [1874922]

I don't think there are any definitive answers, but in my opinion many new players are a bit too obsessed with merits. They are not a huge game changer until you have a lot of them and also have the stats and educations you need to be effective when fighting.

Like you I prefer the "long game" approach, minimizing resets and only buying merits when you have actual spare cash and something particular you actually feel a need to upgrade.
