It's a bit difficult to explain as you don't seem to understand basic probability calculations, but I'll try. A one in 334 chance means you have that chance every time you search the dump, it doesn't matter how many times you have already searched and only found crap.
Typical gambler's fallacy. Doesn't mean the more you search the higher your chances of getting something valuable become. You have the exact 1 in 334 chance each time you do a search.
I would say get to level 15 and start travelling to earn money.
If you want to earn cash using your energy though then selling losses will yield better income than dump searches (in my opinion) 25 energy = 300k min. return.
Have a plan for that money you earn selling losses otherwise just train and leave players on the street until you get to level 15.
IF in the future you get to gyms where you spend 10 energy a train then any odd 5 bits of energy you have left over then search the dump with that spare 5 energy.
Quote: So currently there are 333 different types of items sitting in the dump, if someone was to drop say... A donator pack, or some other high value item in there, you would have a 1 in 334 chance of finding it.
I doubt someone would dump high value item at the first place.
Then yes, 1/334 chance of finding doesn't mean you need 334 searches to surely find it. It's the opposite: you have 99,7% (p1 = 333/334) probability of not finding it per first search, 99.4% (p2 = p1*(333/334)) probabilty of not finding it per 2 searches and so on.
(By the way, following the same formula, you could find it with 60% probability after 300 searches if it's there in the dump, but replies above provide much more valuable suggestions regarding your E usage)
Even that doesn't work, I don't think. You're assuming that there are 334 different types of items, and if you find something else on the first search, that leaves 333 types of items. That's why you're giving an increase chance of finding the one good item after a search that found something else.
But if you find a hammer or a jacket on the first search, there are probably still 334 different types of items, because there are lots of hammers there, and lots of jackets. Same with bricks, and quite a few other low end cheap items.
And, as you mentioned, there is a very high chance that their isn't a DP in the dump for you to find.
Louis_de_Pointe has the best answer, IMO. OP should quit searching the dump, get to level 15, and he can make much more money, without using his energy. Searching the dump is not a good use of energy, or a good way to make money.
Has ANYONE actually read that article properly??? It is not saying that the probability of finding a high value item is 1/334 it is saying that this is the probability of finding a certain item in the dump (assuming that there are 334 different types of item in the dump) is one over the amount of different types of item in the dump.
For all you know; there could be nothing of value in there what so ever, Want to know whats in the dump? Like my suggestion here:
>> You're assuming that there are 334 different types of items, and if you find something else on the first search, that leaves 333 types of items.
Actually no. I am basing on the assumption there is 1 out of 334 good type of items in the dump (which is likely not true, of course) and there are still 334 types of items after each search. Thus, every of the consequent searches still has 333/334 prob of finding crap, and thus probability of finding a good item (1/334 per search) per N searches is 1 - (333/334)^N, which is opposite of not finding that good item (which is surely not there :)) per N searches.
When you flip a coin you have 1 in 2 chance of getting heads... that doesn't mean if you get tails the first time then you'll get heads the second time.
