The reason why it's a staff measure is because a lot of players couldn't be trusted with such a tool. They'd ban themselves for the maximum amount of time on a whim (I.e. a single loss streak), and then immediately regret it and be stuck without a chunk of the game for the duration.

We saw the same issue with 'self-fedding', hundreds and hundreds of players deleted their accounts via staff, only to come back relatively soon afterwards pleading for them back again.

It's certainly not the majority of players, but it's a really huge chunk to result in more negative than positive outcomes.

We have a tool to ban players from the casino, for those who actually need it, when they need it. Casino bans should be reserved for those who have an actual problem. Requiring the player to message staff (a fairly simple procedure) is in my opinion, a necessary extra step, so only those who need it actually get it.

But perhaps I can pass this along to bogie to see if he feels any differently.

Perhaps you could limit the time a player could ban themselves to, say, 3 months for the first occurrence, and then each consecutive ban after that could be increased by another 3 months.

Another thought, add an option on your own profile's player report to self ban from the casino.

That way the player with a gambling problem can avoid "one on one" contact with another human that they have a problem, and you still have the process of going through a staff member.

In my opinion,there should at least be some sort of link to information about Casino Bans displayed in the main casino screen, whether that's a link to the wiki, or a link directly to self reporting for a casino ban.

At that point, wouldn't we just be making a system to replace a Direct Message? Ched makes a strong point against a player initiated casino self-ban.

I mean, that is the whole point of this suggestion, no?

The point is to make the process of asking for a casino ban less embarassing for those that need it. To admit they have a gambling problem is an embarrassing situation.

It's a situation so embarrassing that it could easily make a player want to quit the game entirely rather than directly admit to a member of staff that they have a problem. I have seen this happen many times.

If we take the portion of my suggestion above that simply uses the "Self Reporting" function on your player profile, a new system wouldn't need to be built.

Also, the part of this suggestion I feel is most important is displaying information about Casino Bans literally anywhere on the casino page.

The only reason I know Casino Bans exist is because I read the changelog when it was implemented. Many new players will not know of the existence of Casino Bans without an already informed player telling them.

Also a very good point. Give players the ability to lock themselves out for a short time period only. Say a week. Anything beyond that requires talking with staff. Oftentimes, people don't get help for things because they don't want to deal with the judgement of others and themselves. You make a good point. If we keep the self ban relatively short then it also addresses the concern that people will quit the game after locking themselves out of the casino for too long.

So next set of ideas;
- Make the self-ban a short period, say 1 week max at a time;
- Add information about Requesting a Casino Ban to the casino page/game pages.

Presently I feel our current system works as intended, beyond this and I foresee a lot of people being mailed by staff asking to unban which trivialises the system.

We can certainly look into making the availability of this clearer though.
