The Casual Player Handbook
A guide for the non hardcore player

Asking yourself if you are a casual player? Not sure if this is the guide for you? Complete this test to figure out!!!
A) Did you read lots of detailed guides but only felt more confused?
B) Do you think that perfectionists who spend hours to be as efficient as possible are boring nerds?
C) Do you want to play this game at your own relaxed path?
D) Do you have life outside of torn?

If you answered NO to 3 or more questions, you failed the test, this is not the guide for you. Go read Baldr's guide. Bye.
But if you answered YES, then you are a casual player, and i am happy to tell you what it means -
You won't have 10s of billions in your bank, but you will be able to afford everything you need.
You won't catch up to the more dedicated players of your age, but you won't fall too far behind.
You won't do everything as efficient as possible, but you will have fun.
It doesn't matter if you are a new player doing his first steps in this shitty lovely city, or an older player who still doesn't understand what the **** is going on, you are a casual player, and this is the only guide you will ever need!

Energy

Don't use it to search the dump.

Energy is used to train at the gym to increase battle stats, and that's the best thing to do with energy. The more energy you spend at the gym, the stronger you will become.
There are 4 ways for the casual player to obtain energy:
Natural Energy - Your energy will regenerate over time, use it when you can, its free!
Xanax - At the cost of 830k you can get 250 energy and that's the best deal you can get. When you buy Xanax at the item market double check its not a vicodin. you can take 1-3 xanax per day, depends on your activity level. One per day is good, 2 per day is even better and 3 per day is for dedicated nerds.
Donator pack - No, you don't need to spend your real life money to get it, you can use torn cash as well. It will give you an improved energy regeneration rate and will increase your max energy to 150 instead of 100. Buy it at item market for 24m-25m when you can afford it, but don't give up on xanax to be able to afford it. Double check that its not a box of grenades.
Refills - After you have donator status, you should use daily energy refills if you can afford them, 150 energy for 25 points is a good deal. buy points at the points market and spend them at the points building.

Happy

Higher happy = Higher gym gains.

Buy 5 edvds at 15m-20m, stack 1k energy at cost of 3.2m, take all the edvd and ecstasy and train. do it until 400k stats.
People are spending millions on items to temporary boost happiness to 20k-60k then train with 1000 energy, that's called "happy jump" and its the best things to do if you don't have life outside torn want to boost your stats ASAP. We won't talk about it here, this simple method should be good enough:
Property - Renting a better property will improve your max happiness. If you are level 14 or below, rent a castle. At level 15 you will want to rent a private island with an airstrip, you will understand why when you read the active income section. don't overpay for a property with a vault as you can't use vaults in rented properties. Don't forget to 'move in' to the property.
Candy - Now you have higher max happiness, but its increasing very very slowly, so slow that even the casual player should speed it up. Don't worry, its a very simple thing to do - Eat some candy to boost your happiness. You can buy cheap candy at Sally's Sweet Shop then eat them from your items page.

Nerve

Crimes are good source for merits & income, don't pass on them!

Every time you succeed in a crime you gain CE (crime experience), every time you fail and sent to jail, you lose CE, other results (blue / reds that hosp you) doesn't affect your CE. As you gain CE you will have better chances succeeding in crimes and your max nerve bar will increase by increments of 5 to max of 60. Merits, faction bonuses & jobs specials can also increase your max nerve, so subtract them from your max nerve to know whats your NNB is (natural nerve bar).
This is the crime route you should take:
Search for cash - I have no idea why searching for cash is illegal in Torn, but apparently it is. 10 times is all you need.
Sell copied media - The 3 nerve crime, the type of media doesn't matter, do 200 - 250 of those and you can move on.
Shoplift - The 4 nerve crime. Shoplift>Clothes Shop>Jacket. If you are getting red results, sell some more copied media. Keep with the jackets until you hit 30 NNB. Don't do other shoplift crimes.
Arson - The 11 nerve crime. Arson>Warehouse. This crime provides a nice income and is the best crime for your CE. After 10k arsons there are no more merits to gain from this crime and your NNB should be 60 or very close to it. It will take very long time to get there so i will not cover in this guide what to do after that.
To do the Arson crime you need a Gas can, and the Driving License education complete. Sometimes failing this crime will send you to hospital for 4-7 hours, so make sure you have some Morphine on you to get out quickly.

faction

Join a faction to get massive boosts.

Even as a casual player you should be in a faction for the huge boosts you can get. here is a list of the best perks faction can provide:
Steadfast - Increase gym gains up to 10% to two stats & up to 15% to other two stats
Excursion - Buy more items when you travel. This one is huge income boost. Read "Active income" section below for more info.
Criminality - Increase your maximum nerve bar.
Toleration - Reduce addiction points gained when taking Xanax. Even if you take only 1 Xanax per day, you want this perk. Read "addiction & rehab" section below for more info.
Organized Crimes - The ability to participate in faction organized crimes for lots of CE (and income after you hit 60 NNB).
Armory - The most important thing for lazy players like me you: Lots of factions provide free beer, candy & meds to their members. Those are cheap items so I can you can afford them easily yourself but its f****ng annoying to buy them every time.
Extra fun - Most factions will chain once in a while (chain = attack lots of people to get more perks for the faction). Its a nice break from the standard training routine, and what are your stats good for if you never use them anyway? one chain per month should be good as i feel that more then that may be too intense for the casual player.

My faction Hyperion is recruiting! I think it’s a really great place for the casual player, nice, relaxed & friendly environment, no drama and no intense chaining. With 2.7m respect we have great perks for any player: +40 nerve bar, +14% gym gains, increased travel items, increased booster cool down and much more! If you are above level 15, took more then 150 Xanax & over 150 days old just apply (and mention you were referred by this guide). Exceptions to those requirements can be made, msg me about it.

Passive income

It's not about the wage, its about the items you can steal.

City job - Great passive income source even for a new player with no working stats. Don't work in a player company even if they offer you "high" wage of 50k per day, work in the city job grocer (Newspaper>Job listings>Grocer), when you reach the last rank "Manager" you will be able to use 25 job points to steal a can of energy drink, those cans are worth 1.2m-4m each, depending on current market trends & what energy drink you got, so don't spend your job points on any other specials! Here you can see the answers to the interview.
Player Company - Working in a city job will slowly increase all 3 working stats, around 3k endurance or manual is the time to consider moving to a player company. Try to aim for no less then a 7 stars company. There are lots of interesting options, but if income is your goal then you can narrow it down to two options only -
Sweet shop - Here you will be able to steal energy drinks much faster then the city job, as it only costs 15 points instead of 25, and you can get more points per day if you work in 8 stars or higher company.
Adult novelties - Same concept as the Sweet shop, no wage but you can trade your job points for a high value item, every 20 job points will get you an edvd that can be sold for 3m-4m depending on the market.
All you have to do in player job is to login once per day & rehab if your xanax addiction goes too high but you want to rehab anyway when that happens, read "Addiction & Rehab" section below for more info. In the "Sell" section I'll explain how to safely sell those items.

Active income
Few clicks that will generate millions.

There are many ways of active income in Torn, this guide will cover the best two ways for the casual player.
Shopping - You can buy 100 items from city shops every day, then resell those items to players for profit. Buy beer and sheep kitten and teddy bear plushies from Bits 'n' Bobs or lollipops from Sally's Sweet Shop. Those items restock every quarter hour torn clock. Read the "Sell section" below for more info on how to sell those items.
Travel - At level 15 you will unlock the travel agency and the travel feature. While traveling you can't train at the gym or do crimes or almost anything else, you are stuck on the plane for a certain amount of time depending on your destination. When you land you can buy flowers or plushies and travel back to sell them in torn for huge profit.
Choose a destination that suits you, you want to be able to login to Torn as soon as you land to buy the items and travel back to avoid being attacked in a country far far away from your morphine. Stay there to long and you will get attacked, people will suspect you are holding large amounts of cash and mug you.
Check here before you fly to make sure that there is a healthy stock of flowers / plushies in your desired destination, unlike with city shops, items aboard will restock after half of the time it took them to sell out, so if it took 4 hours to all the camel plushies to run out of stock it will take another two hours for them to restock.
You can bring back with you a 5 items, living in a PI with an airstrip will decrease the travel times and will allow you to bring back more 10 items to a total of 15, faction perks and a suitcase will increase it even further.
Don't forget to hire a pilot on the customize property panel.
Trip to SA is X million = Y profit per minute, While UK is Z million = Y+14 profit per minute so travel to P, Don't waste your time on small annoying details, just look at the travel times and choose a destination that will fit best to you RL routine.

Sell

Sell your items to a trader.

Now you have lots of flowers, plushies, energy drinks etc but no cash until you sell those items. The most efficient way is to own a bazaar, protect yourself from buy muggers (they will buy and immediately mug to steal 7.5%-15% of the money) and sell for yourself. But this guide is not about what the most efficient thing to do, its about what's the simplest & fastest thing to do, and that's to sell the items to a trader so you can get a fast & safe money for all your hard earned items with no effort, he will have to deal with the buy muggers later, but that's his problem, not yours. Buy & invest

Buy supplies & invest in the bank

Now you have lots of Torn cash on hand, spend it or get mugged (everyone get mugged).
Spend some of it on training supplies like xanax, donator packs and points for energy refills and invest the rest in the bank, go to City>Bank to check your investment opportunities. Eventually you will have 2b invested in the bank and with max banking merits you will make ~4m per day.
I created a sample of such routine, modify it to suit your needs and play style -
Once every 2 weeks, cash in all your job points to get energy drinks/edvds and sell them with everything else (flowers & plushies) to your favorite trader. Buy xanax for the next two weeks (10-30, depend on your usage level) and invest the rest of the money in the bank for another 2 weeks. Keep doing this until you see that your bank account is growing for more then 25m per month, that's the time to buy a donator pack. When the growth rate is more then 50m per month, its the time to buy points for energy refills as well.

Stocks
After you have a healthy bank account buy stocks for more passive income.

City finds

Free items!!!

Occasionally items will appear in the city map waiting for you to pick them up, its mostly crap but sometimes you can find very high value items like Drug packs, FHCs and even stat enhancers (worth more then 400m) don't use them, sell them.
Go to the city and choose the "MAP" tab in the upper left and search for items, click on them to pick them up. They will stay there forever so there is no rush to do it every day. Once per X hours days weeks years is also fine.

Rehab and drug addiction

Take as much xanax as you can, don't let the addiction scare you.

As a new player i was afraid of drug addiction and rehab costs, so i didn't take xanax. That was a mistake that i don't want you to repeat so i want to explain about it:
Every time you take a xanax you get addiction points, at the start of every day you lose some addiction points. when you have a high addiction you will see a grey brain icon in the upper left panel, hover your mouse over it to see the number, you don't want it to go over -4%. that's when you need to rehab. its a very cheap & simple process. All you have to do is to fly to the rehab center located in Switzerland and rehab until you have only slightly drug addiction, the last rehab is w waste of money. every time you rehab costs 250k, so even if you rehab 4-5 times, the profit from flowers you can buy there will cover it.
But even if you are so casual that you want to avoid it, you should know that with faction perks you can take 1 Xanax per day and never need to rehab even after you overdose (overdose will give more addiction points).

Q: There are so many guides for new players, why should anyone read this one?
A: The uniqueness of this guide is that it covers everything a new player needs, while keeping it simple and short. Sometimes when you try to explain to a new player how to do everything as efficient as possible and explaining every little detail, he only gets more confused. In this guide i give the guidelines and let him explore the rest himself, and that's the best way to learn, this is a game after all.

Q: Why didn't you write about happy jumps / selling loses / attacking targets to level up faster?
A: They are more complex and require more dedication compare to other things in this guide so i decided to skip on them as i wanted to keep this guide as simple as i can while covering as much as i can. The casual player can defiantly handle himself without them.

Q: Why this is not a step by step guide with pictures?
A: Because i believe that people should use their brain. This handbook is detailed enough for anyone with more than two working brain cells to understand after few tries and some random clicks. Random clicks are part of the fun.
