How are special gyms unlocked in Torn, and can access to them be permanently lost?

Specialist gyms unlock by training to reach the prerequisite membership (George's, Cha Cha's or Last Round), paying the fee, and meeting a stat ratio. The Sports Science Lab instead has a drug limit, and Fight Club is invite-only^[1][2]. For ratio gyms, the wiki (2023 capture) says you keep the membership if you fall out of ratio and can rejoin^[3].

How they unlock

Gyms unlock through training, and each membership has a fee to join and activate^[2]. Specialist gyms add requirements on top: a prerequisite membership plus, for most, a stat ratio. Requirements below are from a 2023-12 wiki capture and were not rechecked for 2026^[1].

• Gym 3000 (Strength), Mr. Isoyamas (Defense), Total Rebound (Speed), Elites (Dexterity): $100,000,000 each, 50 energy, 8.0 gains. Each needs George's unlocked and that stat 25% higher than your second highest stat^[1].
• Balboas Gym: $50,000,000, 25 energy, 7.5 Defense and 7.5 Dex. Needs Cha Cha's unlocked and Defense + Dexterity 25% higher than Strength + Speed^[1]. A 2026 forum post gives the same ratio^[4].
• Frontline Fitness: $50,000,000, 25 energy, 7.5 Strength and 7.5 Speed. Needs Cha Cha's unlocked and Strength + Speed 25% higher than Dexterity + Defense^[1].
• Sports Science Lab: $500,000,000, 25 energy, 9.0 in all four stats. Needs Last Round unlocked and fewer than 150 Xanax and Ecstasy combined taken^[1].
• Fight Club: $2,147,483,647, 10 energy, 10.0 in all stats. Invite only, requirements unknown^[1].

Can access be lost permanently?

For ratio-based gyms, the wiki says no: if you stop meeting the requirements you are kicked out, but you keep your membership and can rejoin once you meet them again. This is from a 2023 capture and was not rechecked for 2026^[3]. One 2016 player reported holding Balboas through excessive defense and being offered Frontline while stats were even; that is a single report, and it fits the wiki.

The Sports Science Lab is the unclear case. TornLife's research found a 2025-10 wiki Drug page saying access to the drug-free lab can be lost once combined Xanax and Ecstasy use passes 150, but that page is not among the documents here. No source in this pack says whether such a loss is permanent or how the membership is treated. Players asked exactly this in 2019 and 2018, including whether someone who passed 150 before unlocking can ever unlock it; the captured texts hold only the questions^[5][6].

History

The gym rebuild was released on 2018-08-14, and patch #57 on 2018-08-21 added notices to gyms with extra requirements, such as the Sports Science Lab^[7][8]. A 2015 forum post quoted the wiki as requiring no Xanax or Ecstasy taken for the lab. By 2018-11-25 a player quoted the wiki as saying a maximum of 150 combined^[6]. The change therefore predates November 2018; the exact date is not in the sources.
