What happens when a player overdoses on drugs in Torn?

The effect of an overdose depends on the drug. It usually drains some of Energy, Nerve and Happy, often means hospital time, and adds extra addiction points. Speed and PCP overdoses also cost permanent battle stats[1]. For Xanax, the main example, it is 5000 minutes in hospital plus a longer cooldown[2]. Opium cannot be overdosed on.

Xanax overdose

The wiki lists the Xanax overdose effect as 100% loss of Energy, Nerve and Happy, 5000 minutes in hospital, and an increased cooldown (24-25 hours) with increased addiction points[2]. A normal Xanax gives +250 Energy, +75 Happy and 35 Addiction Points[3].

  • Bars are emptied, not stats: a new player in 2017 reported 3 days in hospital with energy, nerve and happy at 0, and said his stats were not lost (player report).
  • A revive gets a player out regardless of hospital time or medical cooldown; the wiki names Xanax overdoses as a common reason[4].
  • A 2016 player reported that blood bags did not clear his remaining hospital time and a faction revive was needed (player report).

Other drugs differ

Speed overdose gives a permanent -6 x (current level) to Strength and Defense; PCP gives a permanent -10 x (current level) to Speed[1]. The wiki's Drug table (2025-10 capture) lists further per-drug penalties, which are not quoted in the supplied documents:

  • PCP: 1,620 minutes in hospital, permanent Speed loss, 50 addiction points.
  • Ketamine: 1,000 minutes in hospital, -20% Strength and Speed, cooldown raised to 24-27 hours, 50 addiction points.
  • Cannabis: 300-350 minutes in hospital, drains Energy and Nerve.
  • Speed: 150 minutes in hospital, permanent Strength and Defense loss.
  • Shrooms: 100 minutes in hospital, 50 addiction points.
  • LSD: -30% Speed and Dexterity, -50% Happy, cooldown up to 590 minutes (estimate).
  • Ecstasy and Vicodin: no hospital time listed; Ecstasy removes Energy and Happy, Vicodin costs 150 Happy.
  • Opium: no overdose.

Hospital and addiction

Staff said in 2016 that an overdose while already in hospital resets hospital time to the drug's overdose default rather than stacking, so a longer stay can be shortened. Staff said in 2023 that natural addiction decay can clear overdose addiction.

Chance

Addiction, frequency of use, number taken and time since the last overdose do not affect the chance[5]. The faction 'Overdosing' upgrade cuts it by 3% per upgrade, max 30%[6]. A 7* Nightclub special cuts it by 50%[7]. The wiki gives a number only for Cannabis, 1 in 2500[5]; no Xanax percentage is documented.

Players in 2018-2019 repeatedly reported overdosing more often than expected, for example 3 of about 8 Xanax[8] and 3 of 11 tablets[9]. These are small samples and player reports.

Where sources disagree

  • A 2017 wiki theory list suggested lower addiction may raise overdose chance, while the wiki says addiction has no effect on it[5].
